An interesting tidbit about iron and RNY patients

I just got off of the phone with Dr Brader's office about my anemia issues and they told me something very interesting. When your hemoglobin levels fall below a 10 you should receive an iron infusion. Apparently it is next to impossible for a bypass patient to recover (above a 10) with oral supplements alone.

Food for thought. I am calling the hematologist now

thanks for posting, I am taking generic Centrum multi vitamin with 18 mg if iron in it 2x's a day- wonder if that is enough iron?  the only thing they have mentioned about supplementing with my bloodwork is B12.....   what are some symptoms of anemia?  thanks!

When was the last time that you had your labs pulled? Chances are you are fine. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, restless leg syndrome, headaches, dizziness

Liz,

I found out that alot of RNY patients have low iron because of the malabsorption issue. I am one of them. I had IV iron in June, no problems but it was just a pain going four weeks in a row.

Just had labs done and my iron was good, for now. My hemotologist told me that I will probably need to go for another round of treatment somewhere down the road....

See ya on Saturday...

Thanks for the info!

Dr Brader's NUT told me that there is an excellent new iron supplement out - Bioera http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=&skuId=715203&productId=715203&navAction=jump&navCount=3

and
it is available at pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens etc). She said that we absorb it really well. Remember it helps to take it with vitamin C too!
